With restrictions lifting and borders re-opening, the last six or so weeks have felt like a camera re-focusing. A shift that’s been defined by the injection of great distance and new adventures with special company.
Australia and Southeast Asia in 2031
In my conversation with Ben Bland, Director of the Lowy Institute's Southeast Asia Project, we look at how Australia is positioning itself in Southeast Asia, what this means in terms of foreign relations and the big question for this episode: how will Australia engage with South East Asia in 2031? Have a listen!
The final stretch
Being in the right part, of the right country, at the right time has opened the door for so much exploration.
Down the East Coast
Drawn to the water, I sat myself on one of the sandstones that formed over thousands of years. Gazing over the beach, I was swept away with the enormity of the coastline. With the view framed by Tin Pan Bay and Double Island Point, all the senses came to life.
Karumba
This edition of re:location is about life in Karumba. This is a town with a real sense of ease and calm, and where nature rules. Nestled in the south east pocket of the Gulf of Carpentaria, I talk with a few of Karumba's 500 locals about what makes town tick, barramundi and life alongside crocodiles.
Alice Springs
At times, it’s hard to focus in a city like Alice Springs. There is a strong sense of people having deeply contrasting experiences – and there is a huge economic gap between the first nations and white communities. But running against the stereotype and reputation, my first impression of Alice was as an upbeat kind of place, and that it’s incredibly welcoming. Have a listen!
Luis Rodriguez, Almu Morate and William Creek
Luis and Almu are two very adventurous spirits who managed to find themselves in South Australia's smallest town. This edition of re:location is about their journey and life in William Creek.
A gentle desert
When the rains came, they told me I was ‘stuck’. Unless I wanted to retrace my steps back along the bitumen, travelling the Oodnadatta Track would require an extreme patience and a real slowing down.
All about home
On this special 21st edition of re:location, we’re looking back at the conversations that have featured on the show since we started in April. In a year that’s been characterised by challenge and loss – people have been forced to find positives and get to know their cities better. It's been fascinating hearing them reflect on 'home'. Have a listen!
Timmy D and Walgett
It was super talking with Timmy D on the third and final part of this series on Walgett. I was grateful for how he shared his special connection with town and the surrounding area, how it stems from his love of family, and their long connection with this part of Australia. Have a listen!
