Central Australia

Since July 2022, I’ve been living and working in Central Australia. You can find a sample of my work here.

Language protection

There are more than 100 Aboriginal languages spoken in the Northern Territory. Many of those languages are now only spoken by a handful of fluent speakers. During my time in Central Australia I’ve documented efforts by different communities to inspire the next generation of Pertame and Warumungu speakers.

Diverse communities

Living in Central Australia can be an isolating experience for people who have moved from different parts of Australia and across the world. In my work, I’ve been privileged to profile incredible stories of people banding together to create and shape their own sense of home in Tennant Creek and Alice Springs. The sense of support and community is wonderful!

Challenges

Central Australia is a place of extremes. For many First Nations people who call this part of Australia home, life is shaped by poverty, violence and the ongoing impact of colonisation and dispossession. It is also part of the country that comes under the microscope when tensions flare and violence persists.
